The Peer Ambassador Program is dedicated to providing a comprehensive student leadership experience that fosters professional and personal development and encourages students to create leadership identities as individuals and as members of a teams. The Peer Ambassador Leadership Program is a paid leadership opportunity within the Division of Student Affairs. The program, housed in the office of Student Transition Programs, aims to develop students into strong leaderswho will "Educate for Justice" on campus and beyond. It provides an excellent opportunity for students to network at all levels of the College.
Student participants will gain the foundational framework to understand that “leadership is a process, not a position.”
Apply to be an Orientation Leader for Fall 2023:
New Student Orientation Leaders (OL) will work with the Peer Ambassador Team Leaders and staff of the office of Student Transition Programs to implement the New Student Orientation program in the Spring. The primary role of an OL is to provide guidance to new students and facilitate Orientation activities. Orientation Leaders will develop meaningful relationships with others, gain practical competence to carry out duties successfully and develop an understanding of their personal leadership development.
Responsibilities:

Guide and welcome new students, families, and guests to John Jay College of Criminal Justice.

Assist with all aspects of Fall New Student Orientation including, but not limited to, orientation prep, escorting students/families and guests around campus, event set-up/tear down, participation in meals and evening activities, crisis response, and other duties as assigned.

Facilitating and effectively managing small group discussions with incoming students including resource sharing, supporting students through their transition to college, self-identity exploration, etc.

Creating a welcoming and inclusive environment by articulating and exemplifying John Jay College’s academic and community expectations, addressing common transition questions, discussing what it means to be part of a diverse community, and modeling an exploration of self/social identities.

Being a responsible and positive peer mentor to new students, understanding that this relationship continues into the semester and has a significant impact on a student’s experience.

Introducing students to campus support services and locations across campus, as well as social, emotional, and academic resources provided by the college.

Interact with students throughout the Spring semester with newsletters, phone calls and events.

Must be enrolled in classes for Fall 2023

Must be present for the entirety of OL Training in July and August and the Orientation program. See below dates.

Must have a minimum 2.5 GPA (Bachelors) or 3.0 GPA (Masters)

Commitment to abide by all university policies and procedures.

Must be in good disciplinary standing at the time of their selection and throughout their work with the office of Student Transition Programs. Any previously assigned conduct sanctions must be completed by the time of the interview process.

Mandatory Time Commitments

Must be in attendance in the Orientation Leader Group Interview on Thursday, March 23, 2023 from 1:40pm-2:55pm.

Orientation Leaders will be expected to work 20 hours per week from late July 24, 2023 to August 25, 2023 (dates will be finalized during the Spring 2023 semester). Additionally, this position has the possibility of extending throughout the Spring semester for 5 hours per week for 14 weeks during the Fall 2023 semester. This position will work in a hybrid model.
Benefits/Compensation
New Student Orientation Leaders will gain significant leadership experience; develop professional relationships with faculty, staff, and students; and learn effective communication skills. In addition, new student Orientation Leaders will receive a $1200 stipend (before taxes), meals during the on campus work days, and merch. For the work done during the semester, you will receive a stipend of $975 (before taxes).

Serving the Community
Peer Ambassadors are current undergraduate and graduate students who are selected to serve the John Jay community. They provide relevant information to prospective students, family members, current students, faculty, staff and guests on all facets of campus life. Peer Ambassadors participate in a variety of activities including public relations programs, new student orientation, commencement, campus tours, special recruitment and retention events.
As greeters at special events for the President’s office, academic departments, as well as other departments including the Pre-Law Institute, Alumni Affairs and the office of Community Outreach & Service Learning, Peer Ambassadors make campus visitors feel welcome, comfortable, and engaged.

Eligibility
- Must be enrolled full-time
- Have successfully completed at least 12 credits at the College
- Hold a minimum 2.8 GPA, 3.0 preferred
Interested graduate students:
- Must be enrolled full-time
- Have successfully completed at least 12 credits at the College
- If the graduate student has completed their undergraduate degree at John Jay, they must have graduated with a 3.0 GPA to participate as a first semester graduate student
In addition to the above requirements, all applicants should:
- Demonstrate the following criteria which will be reflected in your resume, interest letter, and letters of recommendation
- Demonstrated leadership experience (on or off campus)
- Possess strong interpersonal skills including effective communication, the ability to be self- motivated, a commitment to professionalism, etc.
