ASIS Security Industry Career Pathways Guide
ASIS International (ASIS) and the Security Industry Association (SIA) retained McKinley Advisors (McKinley) to conduct research to understand the career pathway of security management and supplier personnel, including their educational and professional backgrounds, job titles and responsibilities, required knowledge, skills, and abilities. The resulting guide provides insight into the common ways in which professionals enter and advance through the security field and describes the level of preparation and experience that best ensures their success.

City University of New York (CUNY) Career Page
CUNY is the public university system of New York City. It is the largest urban university system in the United States, comprising 25 campuses: eleven senior colleges, seven community colleges, one undergraduate honors college, and seven post-graduate institutions. While its constituent colleges date back as far as 1847, the City University was established in 1961. The university enrolls more than 275,000 students. The following internship opportunities are ideal for students seeking practical experience. These opportunities are very competitive, and often time sensitive, so be sure to note the deadlines and make sure to research early and submit your applications well before the time you would actually like to do the internship (at least one, if not two semesters in advance). That said, if you miss the deadline, make note of the date so you can be on time for the next year's posting. For some opportunities, interns can be selected on a rolling basis, so if a strict deadline is not provided, feel free to apply.

Center for a New American Security (CNAS) Internships
The Center for a New American Security (CNAS) is an independent, bipartisan, nonprofit organization that develops strong, pragmatic, and principled national security and defense policies. CNAS offers opportunities for students via their Joseph S. Nye Internship program. Candidates may apply for research, communications or development internships. Each internship is for six months.

Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Cyber Security Internships
Cyber Security Undergraduate Interns protect CIA data and IT systems by identifying current threats, mitigating vulnerabilities, and anticipating future cybersecurity challenges. CIA internships are for full time students pursuing an undergraduate degree.

CIA Student Opportunities
The CIA is the world’s premier foreign intelligence agency and their work is vital to U.S. national security. The CIA collects and analyze foreign intelligence and conducts covert action. Federal Communication Commission (FCC) Internships Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau
The FCC regulates interstate and international communications by radio, television, wire, satellite, and cable in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and U.S. territories. An independent U.S. government agency overseen by Congress, the Commission is the federal agency responsible for implementing and enforcing America’s communications law and regulations. FireEye Cybersecurity Internships
FireEye is an intelligence-led security company headquartered in Milpitas, California. It has been involved in the detection and prevention of major cyber attacks. It provides hardware, software, and services to investigate cybersecurity attacks, protect against malicious software, and analyze IT security risks. Lockheed Martin Cyber Security Internships

Lockheed Martin offers both cyber-related jobs and internships.

Microsoft Internships
Microsoft is an American multinational technology company headquartered in Redmond, Washington. They have a university internship program that would be ideal for students interested in cybersecurity (learning about data science, information technology operations, etc). National Security Agency (NSA) Student Programs
The National Security Agency is a national-level intelligence agency of the United States Department of Defense, under the authority of the Director of National Intelligence.The National Security Agency/Central Security Service (NSA/CSS) leads the U.S. Government in cryptology that encompasses both signals intelligence (SIGINT) and information assurance (now referred to as cybersecurity) products and services, and enables computer network operations (CNO) in order to gain a decision advantage for the Nation and our allies under all circumstances. The NSA offers many student programs, including internships, scholarships and a co-op program, which is detailed in the link above.

New Jersey Office of Homeland Security
The New Jersey Office of Homeland Security and Preparedness (NJOHSP) offers internships to a select group of applicants for college undergraduate juniors and seniors or graduate students during the fall, spring, and summer semesters. These are part-time, unpaid internships located in either their Hamilton or West Trenton office. All interns are assigned work assignments that are part of on-going projects at NJOHSP so that they experience having responsibility as well as contributing, just like employees. In addition to this, they have an opportunity to attend various meetings, participate in question and answer sessions with NJOHSP experts, and attend field trips to enhance their learning experience.

New York City District Attorney's (DA's) Offices
The District Attorney's office prosecutes crimes committed against the state, within a local government area. In NYC, there is a district attorney's office in each of the five boroughs. These offices offer many opportunities for students to serve as interns and they also offer many entry-level career opportunities for recent graduates. New York State (NYS) Internships

New York City (NYC) Fellowships and Internships
NYC offers many opportunities for students, including: the Americorps Vista, City Service Corps, Civic Corps, Community School Corps, CUNY Internship Programs (also listed above), the John D. NYC Department of Investigation (DOI) Internships
NYC DOI offers internship opportunities year-round, with a robust summer internship program. This is a great program for anyone who is interested in a career doing investigative work, who needs to gain experience. Incidentially, this is where the author of this website started her own investigative career.

NYC Emergency Management Internships
NYC Emergency Management helps New Yorkers before, during, and after emergencies through preparedness, education, and response. The agency is responsible for coordinating citywide emergency planning and response for all types and scales of emergencies. It is staffed by more than 200 dedicated professionals with diverse backgrounds and areas of expertise, including individuals assigned from other City agencies. Transportation Security Commission (TSA) Internship Program
The TSA is an agency of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security that has authority over the security of the traveling public in the United States. They offer several opportunities for students and also have some programs for recent graduates. More information is available via the above link.

Security companies offer jobs in the field of security & investigations. Generally speaking, security companies are awarded contracts to provide security-related services at various private and public locations. Each company will have post the jobs they have available on their respective websites. These positions are great for recent graduates, as they provide opportunities to gain practical experience in either one, or perhaps various organizations. Many of these companies have been around for a long time, with well established reputations. Some specialize in certain areas or types of security, where as others provide vast opportunities on a global scale. ADT Security Services
ADT was founed in 1874 and their headquarters is in Boca Raton, FL. ADT has more than 17,000 professionals in over 200 locations throughout the U.S. and 6 million customers. As of 2015, ADT was the largest home security provider. This link takes you to their job postings.

Allied Universal
Allied Universal is an American provider of security systems and services, janitorial services, and staffing. The company waspformed in 2016 by the merger of security firms Universal Services of America and AlliedBarton Security Services. The combined company is reportedly the largest provider of security guards in the United States, with over 140,000 trained officers. American Security LLC (ASI) has provided security, investigative, and consulting services since 1959. ASI is the largest independently owned, full service security agency in the Midwest. Paragon Systems was founded in 1983. They are a United States-based private security and investigation firm, headquartered in Herndon, VA. Paragon Systems is a subsidiary of Securitas. Walden Security

Security-Related Organizations and Associations

Security organizations are great resources for training and networking within the security field. Some are more general security-related organizations and some are more specific to certain fields of security. Some, such as ASIS, also offer a career center with exclusive job listings. It is possible for an organization to provide a special discounted rate for current students and/or discounted prices on their certification programs, such as the ACFE. That can be a great opportunity for students. If you don't see them mention it on their website, you may want to contact them to ask.

Association of Certified Fraud Examiners
The ACFE is the world's largest anti-fraud organization and provider of anti-fraud training and education. The ACFE has more than 85,000 members worldwide. The ACFE has a career center with many job opportunities. they also offer a special reduced membership rate for current students. Academy of Security Educators & Training (ASET)
The Academy of Security Educators and Trainers (ASET) was founded in 1980 as a non-profit professional society. When preparing your resume, don't forget to include the projects (research, reports, etc.) that you have done as "experience" on your resume! The work that you have done in this program is valulable in preparing you to be a great employee in this field and would make an ideal addition to your resume - especially for students that have not yet completed an internship in the field. Also, it is wise to appreciate the value of networking. While in school, it is great idea to network with your fellow students and professors, as they can be great resources for you in your job search.
